Is Wake n' Bacon off the back burner again? - 30th March 2011

A little over four years ago, we wrote about an invention that wakes you up to the smell of grilled bacon. Not just the smell though, as the
device actually cooks some bacon for you. Well, pressure of other inventions and a career meant that the inventor didn't have time to pursue
his creation although he did have at least one party interested in taking it closer to full production.
Now, after all this time, Matty Sallin, the inventor, has been on ABC's TV show Shark Tank demonstrating his bacon grilling
alarm clock in person. Perhaps we are getting closer to seeing one in the shops?

Charles Hill Sports Hall - 13th November 2010

The Charles Hill Sports Hall in Loscoe will close and be demolished next year unless a third-party company or
organisation can be found to take it over from Amber Valley Borough Council. The council says that it the hall is too
costly to keep open as it already receives an annual £60,000 subsidy and is also in urgent need of repair. However,
many local people do use it and feel that this is exactly the kind of facility that the council is supposed to provide.

Amber Valley Beer & Cider Festival (30th September - 3rd October 2010)
Great to see that the first Amber Valley Beer & Cider Festival was well attended and got off to a cracking start. It was held at
Butterley Stationn, home of the Midland Railway Centre near Ripley, Derbyshire.
The festival was held in a marquee and with another bar on two (stationary) railway carriages. First impressions were not encouraging with nobody in
sight, no cheery sounds, and a less than obvious route to the marquee via an almost deserted railway station. Heavy rain also made one of the routes
very muddy, but once inside, hot food and live entertainment on Friday and
Saturday evenings, and over fifty beers, ciders, perry and wines, ensured success. Such was the popularity that by about 9pm on Saturday evening, many
of the beers were beginning to run out.

Yellow Duck Marine loses a wheel!
The Yellow Duck Marine, the famous amphibious vehicle that takes sightseers around the city of Liverpool, including a tour
afloat in the docks, came to grief on the city streets when a wheel was lost. Quite how a wheel can come off when the vehicle is in use is a mystery
but luckily nobody was hurt and the operators are cooperating with the police investigation so we might learn more in due course.

XH558 flies again
Following last year's disappointment when the XH558 Vulcan was airworthy but unable to fly at RAF Waddington owing to the Permit
to Fly not being obtained in time, it's good to be able to report that she was allowed to display this year. But only just. The test flight that confirmed
that all the winter's maintenance had succeeded took place on Thursday. On Friday, just one day before the airshow, the paperwork was
submitted to the CAA to obtain the Permit to Fly. Fortunately, with lessons learnt from last year, all parties had agreed to co-operate
to turn the paperwork around in record time, which appears to be just what happened.

No Red, White & Blue Festival for Codnor and Denby this year
The British National Party has decided not to hold its annual festival on land off Codnor Denby Lane this year, citing concerns
about the cost of policing the 'agitators' that the event attracts. The festival may be replaced by several smaller events at various locations
around the country.
The cost of policing the festival, or more accurately perhaps, policing the protestors against the festival was in the region of £250,000 in
2008. Last year, the figure rose to £500,000. This year, the BNP has stated that fears of the cost rising to £1 million, have been a factor
in their decision to replace the festival.

Icicles on the Snake Pass. 30-Jan-2010

Whilst most of the snow and ice has now melted away, a bush at the side of the A57 Snake Pass stands covered in icicles.
The road had been flooded as the snow melted and a nearby stream overflowed. The air temperature
was still a couple of degrees below freezing, though, so every time a vehicle went through the water, the bush
was showered with near-freezing water, which then became frozen water, forming long icicles.
High water as the thaw continues

The River Derwent reaches high levels as the snow continues to melt on higher ground. The footpath from Chester Green
into the city centre is under water as is passes beneath St. Mary's Bridge (far left).

The full and fast flowing river was carrying branches, debris, and a few ducks and seagulls, swiftly downstream.
