Stogursey Castle

Stogursey castle was built by William De Courcy in the 12th century, although there was
probably an earlier fortification on the same site. It can been found in the village of Stogursey
in Somerset. Just 8 miles west of Bridgewater.
Take a walk down Church Street with the Memorial and Village Stores on your right. Turn right down a small
lane aptly named Castle Street. Follow this lane and you will soon be on a footpath, this path leads right
up to the Castle Moat which still has water in it.
The yellow thatched cottage that forms the Gate House was built in about the 17th century, although the twin
towers of the gate house date from before 14th century.

You cannot go right up to the castle walls as the moat and a gate across the bridge prevent this.
Keeping the castle on your right follow the path and jump a small stream and you can then walk almost the
whole way round the castle following the moat.
The cottage is owned by the Landmark Trust, who have restored it and now let it out for holidays.
By doing this the Landmark Trust can pay for the upkeep of the cottage and ensure it is there for many years to come.
