Thames Barrier

The Thames Barrier in London is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world.

It spans the River Thames at Woolwich and protects central London from flooding.

The Barrier was completed in 1982. It was first raised against high tides in 1983 and officially opened in 1984 by HM The Queen.

Thames Barrier

It was back in 1953, that the idea of a flood defence system involving a barrier across The River Thames was first thought about. This was after a great flood that drowned over 300 in that year.

Work on the barrier started in 1974 and took ten years to complete. Tides rushing in from the sea used to be the main cause of flooding in London.

Thames Barrier

Since the Barrier became operational in 1982, it has been closed 443 times, 119 of these occasions have been to protect London from flooding, 78 were for tidal surge conditions and 41 were due to prevent rainfall/fluvial flooding.

In addition to these, one closure was to assist with salvage work on the Marchioness and one for repair works following the Sand Kite incident.

The other occasions were monthly closures for experiments and tests.

You can find out how the Thames Barrier works at the Thames Barrier Information Centre.

The Information Centre houses a small exhibition that shows you how the Thames Barrier was designed, built and works. There is also a chance to learn about the history and environment of the River Thames.

The cafe enjoys lovely views overlooking the Barrier and the River Thames. There is also an outside picnic and children's play area.
The Information Centre and cafe is only open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, 10.30am to 5pm.
The centre is also open on Bank Holidays.
